In the Gospel of these past Sundays (MT 13), Jesus has taught us about the kingdom of Heaven. Something very interesting in the teaching of Jesus is that it does not give us the exact description of heaven, but He does invite us with great insistence to be part of it. The parables of the kingdom of Heaven have been presented to us with very different symbols, starting from the simplicity of a small seed that is sown to grow into the majesty of a beautiful pearl, or a treasure which demands of us to give everything in order to obtain it.
The Lord desires that all of us begin to occupy our place in His kingdom from now on; By the grace of our baptism we have received the privilege of being citizens not only of this world, but more than that, citizens of the kingdom of God. That is why our active participation in the life of our parish community is necessary. The time has come to live and act according to our condition, not only enjoying the benefits we receive from God, but also recognizing our responsibility as part of His kingdom.
Belonging to this parish community is undoubtedly a great blessing, as it seeks to have each of its members live and act according to the teachings we have received from Jesus. We, as disciples-missionaries have found that treasure, that fine pearl, and we will not allow anyone to snatch it away from us, not by using our strength, but by practicing loyalty, justice, and righteousness of heart.
These were the virtues that God recognized in King David, the father of Solomon who in his dialogue with God asked to be blessed not with a long life, or riches, nor the death of his enemies, but wisdom of heart. Let us ask the Lord to grant us the same wisdom in order to continue building His kingdom here in this community of St. Anthony of Padua. Let’s not allow the obstacles or the great needs we have, push us away from our missionary commitment that gives us our status as disciples and citizens of the kingdom of heaven.
